Juvenile Law Center

The Juvenile Law Center works to abolish solitary confinement for youth through federal and state legislative advocacy, litigation, publications, and education. Most recently, they filed a class action lawsuit against Wisconsin, challenging the widespread use of solitary in juvenile facilities.


ACLU Stop Solitary

The ACLU Stop Solitary campaign focuses on solitary confinement for both adults and juveniles. Resources and advocacy tools can be found here.

National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT)

The National Religious Campaign Against Torture mobilizes people of faith to end torture in U.S. policy, practice and culture. NRCAT works to end the torture of solitary confinement, promoting restorative alternatives and human rights. NRCAT’s video “Breaking Down the Box,” shows the power of a replica solitary confinement cell to bring awareness to the real impact of solitary confinement on human beings.



New York Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement (NY CAIC)

The goal of the New York Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement (CAIC) is sweeping reform of New York’s use of solitary confinement and other forms of extreme isolation in state prisons and local jails. CAIC brings together advocates, formerly incarcerated persons, family members of currently incarcerated people, concerned community members, lawyers, and individuals in the human rights, health, and faith communities throughout New York State.


Solitary Watch

Solitary Watch is a web-based project that operates as a centralized source of unfolding news, original reporting, firsthand accounts, and background research on solitary confinement in the United States. Solitary Watch is co-directed by journalists Jean Casella and James Ridgeway. Solitary Watch creates a weekly update of developments called “Seven Days in Solitary.”


Stop Solitary for Ohio’s Youth Campaign

This state-based campaign to prevent youth from being placed in solitary when held in any out-of-home placement. This campaign is coordinated through the Children’s Law Center of Kentucky.
